American Idol Top 10 Guys Night Recap

These guys are really the Top 10 guys the judges chose? Really? So far this season of American Idol has been one big yawn fest of mediocracy(Urban Dictionary's definition is quite fitting: A society in which people with little (if any) talent and skill are dominant and highly influential.) I liked maybe 2 or 3 of the guy's performances tonight, the rest all ranged from "just alright for me dawg" to downright terrible. We got off to a strong start to the night, then everything just went downhill from there for the most part.

Michael "Big Mike" Lynche: Big Mike had the misfortune to go first but he upped his game and did considerably better than last week. His soulful teddy bear version of James Brown's "It's a Man's World" was pretty good and got a standing ovation out of Randy. It was my favorite performance of his to date, I think he's a sure bet for the top 12.

John Park: The asian choir boy did his best rendition of John Mayer's "Gravity" that he could muster but it still sounded like a warbling disaster. It was kind of flat and Simon called it a "so what?" performance. John may be in danger this week, although I think there are more worthy contenders for the Idol journey video montage.

Casey James: Is it me or his hair getting blonder, shinier, and more curly each week. The first word that popped in my mind when I saw him tonight was Goldilocks. Anyway, Casey did an okay version of Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be" and he played an electric guitar while he sang. Unfortunately the guitar playing was better than the vocals but I'm sure he is in no danger of going home. The shocker of the night was Kara actually saying something bad about her object of lust, saying Casey "took two steps back" in her eyes for the mediocre performance.

Alex Lambert: This guy may share the same last name as last season's glam rocker, Adam Lambert, but that is about the only thing they have in common, however, Alex did perform rather well last tonight. He did a version of John Legend's "Everybody Knows" with his guitar and was "a million times better than last week" according to Simon. I thought he was good, he is not my favorite, but he is endearing enough to be in the top 12.

Todrick Hall: Todrick was all over the place again this week. He chose another odd song choice, Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It", and he sang it only so-so, and it sounded a little weird to me. Ellen suggested he dance more, and then Simon suggested he "move but don't sing," which I think is good advice.

Jermaine Sellers: This guy makes me cringe. I don't like him very much and I don't think he should be in the top 20. He did a flat version of Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" tonight and for the second week in a row made me hit mute. Please leave Thursday night, how could anyone not related to this guy be voting for him?

Andrew Garcia
: Andrew, Andrew, Andrew. Tonight was another "meh" night for me with Andrew. He did James Morison's "You Give Me Something" and it was just alright. I really enjoyed his version of "Straight Up" but I agree with Kara when she said Andrew set the bar too high at the start and has kept disappointing since then. He needs a snort of fairy dust and a dash of glitter, something to get the magic back or I don't think he'll make it very far past the top 12.

Aaron Kelly: The 16-year-old did the Temptation's "My Girl" and although it was an "old-fashioned arrangement" according to Simon, he still sung it well and will probably be sticking around another week.

Tim Urban: The last minute replacement who totally bombed and took a critical beating last week with One Republic's "Apologize" redeemed himself a little this week with one of my favorite songs, Matt Nathanson's "Come on Get Higher". It wasn't great but it was good, Ellen suggested he tryout for Glee, which I think is kind of a good idea, and Simon actually praised his worth ethic and attitude...if not his voice.

Lee Dewyze
: Closing the night was Lee with an emotionally charged performance of Hinder's "Lips of an Angel". It wasn't too bad, it is not really my cup of tea but he did a good job and is drawing comparisons to David Cook. Simon said something that I don't completely agree with, saying Lee "may be the one to beat" I personally don't think any of the guys deserve that title, but we'll see.

Who was your favorite guy singer? Who do you hope gets shipped off to reality TV obscurity Thursday night? Tomorrow night is the top 10 girls night, hopefully with Crystal Bowersox, who caused the Idol schedule change last night with her "medical emergency" rumored to be diabetes related. I'll post a recap of the ladies' performances along with my predictions of who's going home sometime tomorrow.
